Kaba Hiawatha Kamene
Black History Instructor
Kaba Hiawatha Kamene was born at New York Hospital on Monday, November 16, 1953. Since 2011, he has appeared in several critically acclaimed documentaries, including Hidden Colors 1–5 and 1804: The Hidden History of the Haitian Revolution by Tariq Nasheed. He is also the featured narrator in the documentaries Out of Darkness and Heavy is the Crown by Amadeuz Christ, and has starred in Elementary Genocide, Black Friday 1 and 2, and Dame Dash’s The Secret to Ballin, alongside icons such as Snoop Dogg, Ice-T, Wu-Tang Clan, Faith Evans, and Rev. Dr. Michael Beckwith.
Kaba Hiawatha’s voice, speeches, writings, and narrations have been featured in various independent productions. He was featured on NeruvianDoom by Nehru and Doom, in the track titled Om. He also contributed as a writer and performer on Wu-Tang Clan’s EP The Saga Continues, on the track titled Message. In collaboration with Kaashe Muzik, he released two EPs: From Kaos to Order and Mi aMoor.
He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in International Politics from New York University, with a minor in Caribbean Studies (June 1977). He received his first Master of Arts in World History from Hunter College (June 1987), and a second Master of Science in Educational Administration and Supervision from City College of New York (February 1988).
Kaba Hiawatha has served as a Pan-African, African-centered educator, consultant, administrator, staff developer, and curriculum writer for over 40 years. He taught every grade level (Pre-K–12) in the New York City Department of Education for more than 31 years (October 1979–July 2009). He was also a professor in the Black Studies Department at the State University of New York at New Paltz for 12 years (Fall 2004–Spring 2016).
Throughout his extensive career in education, Kaba Hiawatha has consulted with numerous boards of education, schools, communities, parents, and student groups. He considers his most meaningful experiences to be his classroom visits around the world, where he implemented effective teaching and learning strategies. He is a firm believer that culture plays a vital role in education and attributes much of his academic perspective to his mentor, world-renowned educator Dr. John Henrik Clarke.

He has authored and co-authored numerous educational curriculum guides and study materials. He co-wrote Mi aMoor with Kaashe Muzik and authored a biography honoring William Leo Hansberry, the architect of America’s African Studies programs.
Kaba Hiawatha lives in New York with his wife of 37 years, Sharen. They have three children—two daughters, Sasha Madeline and Candace Deana, and one son, Heru—all of whom have followed in their parents’ footsteps, working in fields that serve humanity and the community.
